XC Bragg Creek has added some exciting new programs this year to our previous offerings:

Bunnies (age 5), Train2Train T2T (age 14-18), Recreational Ski Program (age 9-18), Competitive Team (age 12-18), Adult Guided Ski. Please see further detailed information below for program information.

When registering, choose the program specified for your child’s age category. On the first day of lessons, there will be a skill level assessment where children will be placed into homogenous groups according to their skill level and speed. This will help not only our coaches provide the best coaching support to help your skier excel, but also to provide a better skiing experience for your child. We cannot guarantee that your child will be with their friends when placed into groupings, but there are many friendly participants and coaches to help guide and support your child in whatever group they are in. XCBC is one big happy family and growing quickly.

This year, we are asking for a minimum of 5 volunteer hours/child registered in our program. We will collect a deposit cheque of $150/child and return the cheque uncashed once volunteer hours are completed. Once you have completed the online registration on zone 4, you will need to mail a deposit cheque in order to complete your registration. A confirmation email will be sent once a cheque is received. Our club is growing quickly and we need your volunteer support.

As our program has changed slightly this season with rec/competitive/race support options available, this may be a little confusing. Listed below are some registration scenarios to help you choose the right program for your child:

Scenarios:

***My child (age 12+) would like to focus on competitions this year, but not ready to jump into the competitive team with 3/nights/week.

You can register your child for the program listed under their age category ie)L2T (age 12-14), T2T (age 14-18) and select an add-on for race support for $100( see more info below for what this has to offer your child).

***My child (age 6) is brand new to skiing and has not taken the “Bunnies” class. Should I be registering them in the Bunnies program or the Jackrabbits program?

Please register them in the jackrabbits program. We have different levels in jackrabbits and your child will be placed in a group according to their skill level

***My child is big on racing but is not 12 year old yet. Can I register them in the competitive team?

Sorry, not yet. It is recommended to cross train without specializing when under 12 years old. If your child is very serious about competition, we still have some great options for them. Sign them up for the Track Attack program and add-on the “race support” option for $100. We will be there to guide them, keep them on track, but still having fun with the sport. What we don’t want is a youngster to over-do it and hate skiing by the time they are 16. Other fitness options can keep them in tip top shape other days of the week.

***I see that your recreational program is listed for age 9-18. My child who is 7 years old would like to sign up for rec ski 1 day/week.

We have the perfect solution for you. It is called our Jackrabbits program. This program is designed for kids ages 6-9, 1 day/week to learn skill technique, games, endurance ski, and having fun on skis.

***My child is between 9-14 yrs old, would like to be competitive this year. What can I sign them up in to be ready and fit for the ski season?

Sign them up for the Track Attack (ages 9-12) or Learn2Train (age 12-14) program, then add-on the dryland training program happening on Thursday evenings which run 5 weeks prior to the ski season only.

New Programs Descriptions:

Race Support Add-On – Race support has been added to our list of offered programs and designed for the young racer who is not yet ready to commit 3 days/week (or not old enough to join the competitive team), but wishes to compete in some races. Most x-country ski race events are hosted on weekends. XCBC will provide coaches on site to wax your child’s skis in preparation for the events, lead warm up exercises, warm up ski, get them set up at the start, and meet them at the finish, pay for wax room/meeting room rentals at events. Race events may be daunting to a skier new to racing. To have this race support and team comradery, makes a huge difference.

Competitive Team Add-On – The Competitive Team is for skiers age 12-18 who want to focus on racing, improve their technical skill, ski faster, and train 3 days/week. The competitive team also provides dryland training and incorporating this third training day/ week from Oct 29/15- Mar 17/16. In order to join the competitive team, skiers must be registered in an XCBC program (L2T, T2T) and be at least 12 years old. Provided with the competitive team is race coach support, coaches on site to wax your child’s skis in preparation for the events, lead warm up exercises, warm up ski, get them set up at the start, and meet them at the finish, pay for wax room/meeting room rentals at events, outside coach contracting sessions, waxing workshops, dryland fitness training).

Dryland Training Add-On – This program is designed to prepare competitive skiers ages 9-14 who are not signed up for the competitive team but wish to be competitive this season. For 5 weeks prior to ski season, the focus will be on improved endurance, strength, flexibility and agility using fun games and activities in an outdoor environment. These dryland sessions may turn into on-snow sessions if we get an early snowfall.

Recreational Program – This program has been designed for the recreational skier who does not wish to focus on racing, but enjoys being outdoors and having fun on skis. We will be focusing on classic only technique, skill lessons, endurance skiing and having fun with games. This program allows children who focus on other sports, to enjoy skiing with our program 1 day/week.

Bunnies – This program is designed for the 5 year old new to x-country skiing. A parent or responsible adult must be with their child for the entire duration of the class to assist. The focus on this program is to ensure that children have fun on skis. Many games are used to teach skill lessons and to incorporate fun into skiing. They may forget that they are on skis!

Adult Guided Ski – We will have an adult skier that will guide adults not registered in any programs along the West Bragg Creek Trails during the Friday XCBC lesson times. This will be a great opportunity for those adults with children registered in our programs and wish to ski with a group on a guided ski. Dates and prices will be determined depending on coach availability.

Other Program Offerings:  (similar to previous years)

Jackrabbits JR – This x-country ski program is geared towards children ages 6-9 years and is categorized in 4 different jackrabbit levels progressing each year as they gain experience and confidence. The Jackrabbit program focuses on the fundamental skills of cross country skiing including movement on skis, downhill techniques, trail etiquette. This is accomplished through both structured and less structured ski experiences in a positive learning environment. Introduction to skate skiing in level 3-4 of the jackrabbit program.

Track Attack TA – This x-country ski program is geared towards children ages 9-12 years. Skate skiing and classic skiing are both used in this program. Children are encouraged to participate in race events, but this is not mandatory. During lessons, timed events are held that reduce the anxiety of racing – we make racing fun! The focus of the Track Attack program is to help participants become technically competent cross country skiers and use their skills to explore a wide range of ski activities. The goal is to develop classic, skating, and x-country downhill techniques.

Learn 2 Train L2T – This x-country ski program is geared towards children ages 12-14 years. More emphasis is placed on competition, training, endurance and skill at this level but games and fun agility activities are still important to keep it fun. The goal of the program is to develop classic, skating, and x-country downhill techniques and to try out more competitions such as the Built4Speed Series and local Alberta Cups
